Citation indexes - Finding the best journals and articles

Citation indexes enable you to find the most cited articles by finding other papers which have cited them since they were published. You can also use them to find the best journals to publish in. We have a subscriptions to Web of Science.

Journals to be avoided

Other sources of journal bibliometrics

Source normalized impact per paper (SNIP) SNIP methodology site provided by CWTS Journal Indicators. This indicator measures the average citation impact of the publications of a journal. Unlike the well-known journal impact factor, SNIP corrects for differences in citation practices between scientific fields, thereby allowing for more accurate between-field comparisons of citation impact.

SCImago Journal & Country Rank A portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database (Elsevier B.V.). These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains. This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator pdf, developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank™.
Journal quality list (for business related journals) The Journal Quality List comprises academic journals in the following broad areas: Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, and Marketing.
European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH) ERIH is the only reference index created and developed by European researchers to present their research achievements systematically to the rest of the world. It highlights the vast range of world-class research published by humanities researchers in the European languages.
Publish or Perish: Software for retrieving and analyzing academic citations Publish or Perish is software that retrieves and analyzes academic citations. It uses Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Search to obtain the raw citations, then analyzes these and presents the following metrics: - Total number of papers and total number of citations - Average citations per paper, citations per author, papers per author, and citations per year - Hirsch's h-index and related parameters - Egghe's g-index - The contemporary h-index - Three variations of individual h-indices - The average annual increase in the individual h-index - The age-weighted citation rate - An analysis of the number of authors per paper.

Alternative impact metrics

These two resources go beyond conventional citation counts and into social media and the web to create impact measures.

Altmetric - for researchers Altmetric collects article level metrics and the online conversations around research combining online indicators (both scholarly and non-scholarly) to give a measurement of digital impact and reach by tracking, collecting and measuring data from all the places where scientists, patient advocates, journalists, nurses, engineers and members of the public talk about science online - for example, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, message boards and mainstream newspapers and magazines. Altmetric allows authors and publishers to see what people are saying about a scholarly paper and how much attention a paper is receiving relative to their peers.
Impactstory Impactstory is an open-source, web-based tool that helps researchers explore and share the diverse impacts of all their research products—from traditional ones like journal articles, to emerging products like blog posts, datasets, and software.
