Online Reading Lists Help: Bookmarking

Installing the 'bookmarking tool'

The Talis Aspire bookmarking tool enables you to create items for your reading list by saving references from anywhere on the web simply by clicking a button on the favourites bar of your web browser. This includes books, journal articles, and multimedia resources. You can drop these bookmarks directly into your reading list or save them for later.

To install the tool, go to the 'My Bookmarks' tab on the reading lists system and click the Bookmarklet Installation Tutorial. This will explain how to add the button to the favourites bar in your browser.

Bookmarking a book from the Library Catalogue

Open the Library catalogue in a new tab in your browser and search for a book (or journal or any other item) you want to add. From within the book record, click the bookmarklet. If not already logged into the reading list system, you will be asked to log in at this point. Check the book details and click Create to save the bookmark for later, or Create & Add to List to add it directly to a reading list.

Go back to the reading lists tab in your browser and refresh the page to see the new bookmark.

Bookmarking an e-journal

To add an e-journal title that needs a Middlesex username and password to access, always go through the  Library website to ensure full access. Click through to the homepage of the journal you need and click your bookmarking tool. Check the details of the resource and make any amendments.

Then create the bookmark or add straight it to a reading list, as above.

Bookmarking a website or web page

Click your bookmarking tool from any web resource to add it to your bookmarks. This can be the homepage or any other page of a website, a blog or individual blog post, images, YouTube videos, etc.

Check the title assigned to the page carefully, as this needs to make sense to the students seeing it. You can add extra information, such as author or date, using the 'Add field' function.

Record fields to be included

Please ensure that the fields provided for a resource (book, journal etc) on a Talis Aspire record include the information normally required for referencing (a few examples are shown below):

Book:
Author / Date of publication / Title / Edition (if not first edition) / Place of publication / Publisher

Journal:
Author / Date of publication / Title of article / Title of journal / Volume number / Issue Number / Page numbers

WebPage:
Author / Date of publication / Title  / Place of publication (if available) / Publisher

Bookmarking a book from other library catalogues / bookstores

If the book you need isn't on the Library Catalogue, you can use the same process with other library catalogues or online book stores, like COPAC, WorldCat or Amazon.

Bookmarking an e-journal article

To add a full-text e-journal article always go through the Library's resources on myUniHub, to ensure full access.

Find the article you need and click your bookmarklet. Check the details of the resource and make any amendments.

Always do this from the article abstracts page, as you may find it useful to paste the article's DOI (if available) into the 'Lookup' field.

Then create the bookmark or add straight it to a reading list, as above.
