Student Learning Assistants (SLAs) are experienced students who ‘have been there before’ and know the typical academic issues that new students face in their studies. SLAs do not teach students, but work with you to complement what has been taught in class. SLAs are here to help you have a better understanding of your programme and empower you to find your own learning preferences so that you can take ownership of your learning. SLAs work with academic staff, supporting students in small groups and on a one-to-one basis. Working with an SLA, you can ask questions about your programme without being embarrassed and build up your confidence levels. On my first day at Middlesex Uni I was given some priceless advice by the SU president - “Make sure you squeeze every drop out of University!...Make the most of everything that is on offer here at Middlesex!” and for the next 3 years I did just that!
As a result I gained a lot more out of my student journey than I ever dreamed possible! Middlesex gave me ample opportunity to develop personal, academic and employability skills. I also found many employment opportunities within and through Middlesex; including being a Research Assistant, Education Liaison and Outreach Assistant, Student Learning Assistant, and a Student Voice Leader.
There was so much learning and inspiration in my course, but equally through the range of services, opportunities and events outside of my studies. I wasted no time getting involved in all things extracurricular, and found that this is where the enrichment lies.
After graduating many of my friends who were entering the job market were envious of my experience. Remember that your career starts from your first day at Uni, so it’s imperative to start planning from day one. Decide on your goals, the experiences you want to gain, the fields you want to explore, and what challenges you want to overcome. Every year I did just that, I really came out of my shell, grabbed every opportunity on offer and felt extremely satisfied when it came to graduation day.
I owe my amazing student experience to Freshers week! So what are you waiting for? There is plenty to do at Middlesex, so explore and get stuck in. Make your student experience a memorable one!

Did you know that you can study or work abroad as part of your programme? Middlesex University has around 150 European and International partners enabling you to participate in a study exchange. This could be for a term or even a full year, depending on your programme. Funding is currently available for European placements and some International destinations as well. There are also work placement opportunities within Europe, allowing all students to experience and discover new cultures, and enhance your CV. Like study placements, work placements within the Erasmus+ scheme are funded, with further grants available for those with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds.
